INFORMATION REQUIREMENTS UNDER ARTICLE 33 OF THE REACH REGULATION
REACH, the European Chemicals Regulation, has been implemented in all EU member states since January 1, 2007. Since October 28, 2008, the Candidate List of SVHC substances under Article 59 (1, 1 0) of Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 (“REACH”) has been published and
can be viewed on the ECHA website.
Following the SVHC identification procedure, the European Chemicals Agency ECHA added metallic lead (EC No. 231-100-4 | CAS No. 7439-92-1) to the REACH Candidate List on June 27, 2018.
The inclusion of a substance in the EU Candidate List creates information obligations in the supply chain: If the limit of 0.1% by mass of a Substance of Very High Concern (SVHC) in an incorporated component product is exceeded, information must be provided in accordance with Art. 33 (1) of the REACH Regulation, regardless of the percentage by mass in the overall product. Furthermore, sufficient information must be made available to enable recipients of the articles to use the article safely.
Some of the articles manufactured and distributed by Wilhelm Ungeheuer Söhne GmbH are affected by this information obligation due to the inclusion of metallic lead in the REACH Candidate List. The affected articles are marked on our order confirmations, invoices, and technical data sheets with the following information:
**Information obligations according to Art. 33 REACH Regulation (SVHC Candidate List): Articles contain more than 0.1% by mass of lead (EC No. 231-100-4 | CAS No. (EC inventory) 7439-92-1). Information on the safe handling of articles containing lead can be found at www.wus-online.de**
Along the supply chain, our customers are also obliged to pass on this information to commercial buyers. Upon request, this information must also be provided to end-users. This applies regardless of a potential purchase and requires a response within 45 days.
PRACTICAL TIPS FOR THE SAFE PROCESSING OF PRODUCTS CONTAINING LEAD:
- Wearing gloves when working with lead ensures a firm grip, protects against injuries, and prevents contamination.
- Ingestion of lead particles, compounds, or solutions must be avoided, therefore: always wash hands thoroughly before meals and before smoking.
- Inhalation of lead dust and fumes must be avoided. Welding or soldering should therefore only take place outdoors or in well-ventilated rooms. When dust and smoke develop, wearing a mask is required.
- Contaminated work clothing must be stored and washed separately from other textiles.
- Eating and drinking must be prohibited during lead work.
- A suitable hand cleaner is mandatory.
Further information on the safe handling of lead can be found in Technical Rule for Hazardous Substances TRGS 505.
1) These are CMR (carcinogenic, mutagenic, reprotoxic) substances (category 1 or 2 each). PBT (persistent, bioaccumulative, toxic) and vPvB (very persistent, very bioaccumulative) substances, as well as similarly hazardous substances, which are determined on a case-by-case basis according to scientific criteria.
